Carnival’s new milestone math has me curious

Just read in Cruise Industry News that Carnival has rolled out the updated milestone piece tied to its new Carnival Rewards setup, and one change caught my eye: milestone recognition is being counted by days sailed instead of just number of cruises. They also mentioned refreshed Sail & Sign card designs. That got my old casino brain turning. Years ago, cruise loyalty was mostly a simple punch card with a buffet attached if you squinted hard enough. Now every line seems to be reworking how they measure loyalty, and I have to wonder whether the casino side eventually follows more of that same logic across the industry. For folks here who split time between the tables and the rest of the ship, do you like “days onboard” better than “number of cruises,” or do you think all these loyalty overhauls mostly just move the furniture around?

I actually prefer days sailed, at least as a baseline. A 14-day Alaska run and a 3-day hop out of Long Beach never felt equivalent from a loyalty standpoint, especially for people who spend a lot of time onboard using the ship the way it was intended. I kinda like days sailed for the regular loyalty side, mostly because it matches how a cruise actually feels. Denise and I can do two little weekend runs and it still doesn’t feel like one good 7-day out of New Orleans with sea days, steakhouse, and me donating politely at three-card. Number of cruises always had a punch-card sandwich shop vibe to it. Casino side, I’d still expect its own lane. S

I’m probably in the minority, but I think “days sailed” is easier for ordinary folks to understand. Gene used to joke that our little 4-day runs out of Canaveral padded the cruise count more than our longer ones ever did, and he wasn’t wrong. Days at least smooths that out.
